Tour 2) Wester Ross & Eilean Donan Castle

On leaving the port of Invergordon this tour will follow the Cromarty Firth coastline south to the county market town of Dingwall, before turning west and travelling through the picturesque former Victorian spa village of Strathpeffer, and on to the tiny village of Achnasheen for a comfort and refreshment stop.

On reboarding the tour will continue through stunning Highland scenery, and on to historic Eilean Donan Castle, Scotland’s most photographed castle. The imposing former fortified castle sits on an island overlooking 3 sea lochs, and dates back to the 13th century, was fought over for subsequent centuries, and was finally left in ruins for almost 200 years after being fought over during the 18th century Jacobite uprising.

In 1911 the island of Eilean Donan that was little more than a rocky outcrop sitting just off the coast, with the former castle’s raised remains on it, was bought in a private sale. Over the following 20 years the wealthy owners set about rebuilding almost from scratch. The striking castle that stands today is maintained in a charitable trust for descendants of the same family, for locals and visitors from around the world alike to marvel over and cherish as a significant reminder of centuries of Scottish Highland history.

Our guests will be delighted to be able to spend significant time at the castle, which can now be reached by way of a stone bridge directly from the fine adjacent visitor centre which houses a hearty restaurant, a well stocked gift shop, and ladies and gents washroom facilities.

Please note that photography and videography are prohibited inside the castle, as are rucksacks and other large bags.

On concluding memorable time spent at the castle, and with all guests comfortably seated back on the coach, the tour will resume eastward through wild and bleak Glen Shiel towards legendary Loch Ness, before turning north and travelling along the western shore of the loch, and on to the historic Highland village of Beauly for the last short stop on the tour.

Once all guests are back on the coach, the tour will return north to Invergordon in plenty of time for your ship’s departure.

Please note that this tour is for adults only, and involves a day’s travelling on Highland country roads. This may not suit all tastes. Also please note that Eilean Donan Castle is not disability accessible, and due to its construction involves negotiating numerous stone stairs.
